Electric Volkswagen Racer Crushes Competition at Pikes Peak Hill Climb

We've always known Volkswagen vehicles are fully capable of setting trends and making history, and most recently at the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the second oldest race in the United States, one unique VW model crushed the competition, and was power electrically.

The Volkswagen I.D. R, built like a racecar set the record not only for being the fastest electric car to do the grueling hill climb, but also being the fastest car on the mountain overall. It completed the 12.4-mile course in 7:58.148, which bettered the previous EV record by a full minute, and conquered all other gas- and diesel-powered vehicles as well. It was able to accomplish this thanks to a 671-horsepower electric engine that is able to go from zero-to-62 miles per hour in 2.25 seconds, which is faster than many Formula 1 vehicles, while also having a top speed of just under 150 miles per hour, on a light carbon fiber frame that is aerodynamic and can help generate lots of downforce which helps it grip the pavement well when getting up to speed.

It's quite the accomplishment, and the electric vehicle technology is going to find its way into our showroom here at Mike Raisor Volkswagen. VW says that it will utilize select elements of the EV's power in production models, possibly unveiling a whole lineup of electric vehicles under the I.D. banner we all can enjoy here in our showroom in Lafayette, IN in the future.
